Classification of Alternative Medicine

The National Center on Complementary and Interactive Medicine (NCCIH), a United States government agency has classified the Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) under five major groups.

Types of Alternative Medicine

1. Whole Medical Systems: This type refers to the gamut of holistic medicine that include traditional Chinese Medicine, Naturopathy, Ayurveda and Homeopathy.

2.    Biologically-based Practices: This field of medicine deals with use of substances or products found in nature such as herbs, foods, vitamins and other natural substances. Herbal Medicine is synonymously used for these practices.

3. Mind-body Medicine: This technique presumes that most of the diseases are psycho-somatic in nature and mind affects the bodily functions and symptoms. The system explores link between mind, body and spirit  and believe in therapies that alter the state of mind.

4. Manipulative and body based Practices: These practices focus on imparting healing through manipulation or movement of body parts. 

     5. Energy Medicine: This branch of medicine is further divided into two            types; Bio-field therapies and Bio-electromagnetic based therapies,                based on acknowledged and confirm-able energy fields.
